The baroque iconography was direct, evident and dramatic, with the intention of appealing above all to the senses and emotions. The word “baroque” comes from the Portuguese word barroco meaning misshapen pearl. Later, the name came to apply also to the architecture of the same period. The baroque period refers to an era that began around 1600 and ended around 1750, and included composers such as Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel, who pioneered new styles such as the concerto and the sonata. There was an explosion of new musical styles with the introduction of the concert, the sonata, and the opera.
